Scientific Spelling Homework

Each week first graders will be reviewing words from our Scientific Spelling program for homework.  Five words will be studied each day, Monday through Thursday.  The cover sheet will explain how to call the words out to your child using the “S.O.S.” steps (Save Our Spelling!). This approach has your child follow a process before they write the words on a piece of writing paper.  Please follow the steps with your child as you call the words out to them and encourage your child to use the proper letter formation when writing the words.  Your child should then read the words to you.  After your child has written and read the words to you they will return the assignment to school the following day with your signature showing that you did indeed follow this procedure.  It is important to avoid having your child simply copy the words.  A spelling test with twenty words will be given each Friday.  It will include some of these words, along with other words that contain similar sounds or patterns.  In addition, two sentences will be dictated for the students to write.

Bonus words will also be sent home each week to go along with that week’s spelling test.  These will be words which we have discussed, used, or are studying in various class units.  They will be sent home with every student in our class.  However, it will be up to you and your child to decide if they would like to attempt any or all of the extra words.  No points will be taken off of their regular spelling grade if they miss any of the bonus words, but extra points will be added to their spelling grade for each bonus word spelled correctly.  We have discussed this in depth in class, but please let us know if you still have questions.

Thank you for encouraging good study habits with your child!
